This requirement is applicable to all programs.

The CCTC requires that you verify proficiency of basic reading, math, and writing skills. There are several ways to do this.

• Undergraduate Coursework
• Take and pass the CBEST exam (see the next page: Taking the CBEST)
• Take and pass the CSET Writing Skills Examination at the same as you take the CSET: Multiple Subject exams (see the next module: Taking the CSET and reporting your score)**
• Achieve a qualifying score on the SAT or ACT test*
• Achieve a score of 3 or higher on the AP English exam and AP Calculus or AP Statistics exam*
• Pass a Basic Skills Exam from another state (please inquire at the School of Education office for guidance on this)
• 30 Day Substitute Teaching Permit

CSET Writing Skills Examination 

If you choose this route, you must also pass all three subtests of CSET: Multiple Subjects. You cannot combine CSET Writing Skills with any sections of the CBEST. For more information about registering for the CSET exams, please see Taking the CSET and reporting your score

SAT or ACT qualifying test scores

SAT Exam

Mathematics = 550

ACT Exam
English = 22
Mathematics = 23

If you would like to use your SAT or ACT scores to meet the Basic Skills Requirement, please talk to the Program Coordinator to determine what evidence you need to submit. *Scores must be combined scores.

English
Score a 3 on one of these tests:

• AP English Language/Comp
• AP English Literature/Comp

Math
Score a 3 on one of these tests:

• AP Calculus AB
• AP Calculus BC
• AP Statistics
