Sara Sterner

LSEE Program Leader & Assistant Professor

Sara K. Sterner is an assistant professor in the School of Education, who joined us in fall 2019. She earned her B.S. in Elementary Education from the University of Idaho, her M.Ed. in English as a Second Language from Marymount University, and her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction: Literacy Education with a specialization in children’s and adolescent literature from the University of Minnesota. She is a teacher educator and a qualitative researcher that uses post-intentional phenomenology, arts-based research, and narrative inquiry. Her research interests include inclusive representation in children’s and adolescent literature, preservice teacher development in equitable and anti-racist literacy practices, reading identities of teachers, and white teacher identity studies. Her scholarship stems from a passion for teaching—she spent 14 years as an upper elementary school teacher in Idaho and Virginia—and her role as a social justice–oriented teacher educator.
